Compositions in Raag Bhupali

Raag Bhupali is suited to many moods, both happy and pensive. It is traditionally performed during the evening hours, after sunset. This raga belongs to the Kalyan thaat. Its vadi (most important note) is Ga, and samvadi (second most important note) is Dha. Raag Bhupali's aaroh and avaroh (ascending & descending scales) are as follows:

1. Naman kar chatur shri guru charana

This composition is a drut khayal by Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande. The poet calls upon his listeners to worship at the feet of their guru in order to purify mind and body as they pass through this world. He says that meditation bears fruit and delivers one from the sorrows of life and death.

2. Jab se tum san laagali

This composition is a very popular drut khayal composition. It it, a woman describes her restless state of mind since falling in love, so much so that her friends have begun to gossip aobut her behind her back.

3. Jaun tore charan kamal par vaar

This composition is a drut khayal by Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande. The poet, an ardent devotee, wants nothing so much as to attain the "lotus feet" (i.e., protection and love) of Lord Krishna and laments that the path to this seems so fraught with difficulties as to almost seem impossible.

4. Ma ni varaj gaaye raagini kar jab

This composition is a lakshan geet by Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande. A lakshan geet is a composition that outlines the main characteristics of a raga or a group of ragas. It serves as a mnemonic device for students. For instance, this lakshan geet talks about the subtle differences between several related ragas - Raag Bhupali, Raag Shuddha Kalyan, Raag Deshkar, and Raag Bibhaas - in terms of the notes they use.
